Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine,also known as PS, a type of phospholipids are found most abundant in brain neuron cells. PS is often regarded as the nutrient of brain, it plays an important role in maintaining and repairing brain cells, improving memory. It is universally acknowledged as effective in prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease and improvement of brain function for elderly. Approved by US FDA, phosphatidylserine is one of the functional ingredients that has a health claim of cognitive function.

Manufacture of phosphatidylserine use non-GMO soybeans or sunflower seed lecithin as source of raw material obtained from enzyme conversion. This product could be widely used in foods such as yogurt, milk powder, drinks and health care products.

Physiological function

Improve cognitive ability

 

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a functional ingredient with FDA certified health claims. According to research studies thatPS is effective in improving cognitiveperformance especially in elderly groups. The clinical study examined the effectof 6 and 12 weeks of soybean-derived Phosphatidylserine (SB-PS) adminis-. tration on the cognitive function of 30 healthy volunteers with memory complaints,using a computerized cognitive assessment tool. By comparingexperimental results between SB-PS(300mg/day) and placeboGroup, it demonstrates significant improvement on memory recognition and memory recall (p=0.013 and p=0.007, respectively) in healthy elders with memory complaints, following a short supplementation period.

Improve memory


The lack of neurotransmitter results in memory capability decline and impaired concentration. With the addition ofPhosphatidylserine as dietary supplement,the fluidity of nerve cell membrane will improve also increase the amount of neurotransmitter. It has proven thatphosphatidylserine have positiveeffect in increasing the number of brain spines,increasing fluidity of brain cell membrane and enhancing glucose metabolism in brain cells, hence,makingbrain cells more active. A total number of 120 middle school students (17-18 years old) participated in a 40-daydouble-blind clinical trial in order to find outthe correlation between PS consumption and brain function. According toexperimental result,Significant improvement on verbal and non-verbal memorization was discovered with 100MGPS daily consumption. (P<0.05)

Relieve mental stress

 

Phosphatidylserine could significantly reduce the level of stress relatedhormone in human body, improve concentration,increase alertness andmemory,relieve unhealthy emotion. PS has been shown to decreaseadrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol responses toacutephysical and mental stress. 75 healthy male volunteers were enrolled for adouble-blind,placebo-controlled study with PS400mg + PA400mg dailyintake. Result shows that in chronically stressed subjects,a daily supplementation of 400mg PS can normalize the hyper-responsivity of thehypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis HPAAto an acute stressor.

Phosphatidylserine supplementation has the potential to attenuate the serum cortisol response to acute exercise stress, increase testosterone to cortisol ratio. PS has been demonstrated to speed up recovery after moderate exercise. By maintaining hormone at a desired level, training efficiency and athletic performance will be promoted. Phosphatidylserine has been shown to improve enzymatic activity by improving membrane fluidity and composition. PS plays a significant role in the maintenance of neuronal excitability and message transfer potentially resulting in a reduced need for adrenergic stimulation at moderate intensity exercise levels, therefore, attenuates exercise induced fatiue.
